What is a Service Tag & how to find it?

The Service Tag is a unique sequence of alphanumeric characters (both numbers and letters) which Dell uses to identify each individual system when making warranty claims, and for identification purposes. They contain seven alphanumeric characters, and are accompanied by a barcode. For more details check out here.

For a desktop, the service tag can be found at the back of the CPU tower.

For a notebook, the service tag can be found at the bottom of your notebook.


Follow below steps to explain your problem to the Dell technician -

Be prepared to provide the technician with the following information:
- Your system's Service Tag Number
- The names and versions of installed operating systems; the operating system that was running when the problem occurred
- Peripherals being used
- Any error messages and/or beep codes received and when they occurred
- What you were doing when the problem occurred. If your monitor/notebook battery is faulty, please kindly check the PPID# e.g DS/N JP-021KEV-42011-12C-0343 before you proceed to contact our technical support for further troubleshooting
- What steps you have taken to resolve the problem, including the results from the diagnostic tests

Cooperate with the technician to resolve the problem. Listen carefully and follow the technician's suggestions. Tell the technician exactly what happens when you perform the suggested task.
