Laptop Repair / Troubleshooting

 We will list some common laptop hardware failure descriptions and some suggestions on how to troubleshoot and/or repair the problem.

 Fixing Common Laptop Problems:

 Laptop does not power on:

                 When you plug the AC power adapter into your laptop, there are no lights turning on at all and there are none of the usual mechanical sounds fans. Pushing the power button does nothing and the laptop remains completely dead.

 ·         Battery stops charging when the input on the DC adapter moves around and the power jack may even feel loose.

 ·         Use a multi meter to test your power adapter and also the power socket on the laptop.  It is possible you may have to disassemble your laptop to access this part.

 ·         You may need to replace the power jack by unsoldering and re-soldering a replacement DC jack on your laptop.

 Laptop turns on but there is no image on the screen, you have a black or blank screen with no picture:

 Symptoms: The laptop turns on, LED lights on the laptop turn on, cooling fan works but nothing appears on the screen. The screen is completely black and blank. There is no image on the screen at all, not even a very dim image. One thing you can try is taking the ram out and putting it back into the memory slots to make sure the memory is seated properly. You can also try testing the computer with known good ram or by removing the memory modules one at a time.  Your computer will function with just one ram stick, so you can test your laptop or desktop with only one ram stick installed to see if one is failing.

 Other troubleshooting steps to isolate the problem can include:

 ·         Removing the hard drive

 ·         Removing the DVD drive

 ·         Removing the modem

 ·         Remove the wireless card

 ·         Remove the keyboard

  Basically you need to take the laptop apart one component at a time to get it to base (minimum) configuration.  This is a good way to test each component and its effect on the entire computer. If the laptop is not powering on after you have taken it down to minimum configuration then most likely your motherboard or processor is dead.

 Laptop has intermittent no power issues.  Laptop turns on and off repeatedly:

 Problem Description: The laptop turns on and after a few seconds it turns off by itself.  The laptop may continue to turn on and off repeatedly until you manually power down the laptop by holding down the power button or taking the battery out.

 Your laptop makes unusual noises when it is on:

 Problem Description: The laptop powers on and seems to work fine, except it makes a grinding or rattling noise. This symptom may be continuous or intermittent.

 Possible problem:

 This problem is mostly associated with a faulty cooling fan or laptop hard drive.  One way to see which component is making the sound is by removing the hard drive from the laptop to test it separately.  If it is making a sound then the problem is with the hard drive.  You can also test the fan by booting the computer from an external hard drive or a DVD/CD with the internal hard drive removed to see if the fan is making the sound.

 Make sure to back up all of your data from the hard drive as soon as possible if you are having a hard drive problem, it can fail any moment. Then replace your drive and transfer your data back.

 Liquid Spills on Laptop:

  Liquid intrusion can cause the following types of laptop damage:

 ·         Short circuit due to conductive nature of wet liquid

 ·         Short circuit due to dried liquid residue

 ·         Corrosion occurs

 ·         Electronic components damaged by above short circuits

 Laptop randomly turns off:

 This is often due to:

 ·         AC power adaptor sensing an overload of power drain

 ·         Overheating processor due to a build of internal dust (clogged fan)

 ·         AC power adaptor not able to sustain normal power needs (faulty power adaptor)

 ·         Battery overheating, due to internal battery fault, or charging levels

 ·         Intermittent short circuit or open connection (check condition of power leads)

 Laptop is slow and continually shows Internet pop-up’s:

 The Laptop is very likely infected with spyware. Spyware is software that hides on your computer and attempts to collect information about your activity on the internet. Spyware is sometimes transferred to your computer when you download 'unknown' free software or when you link to free music Internet programs. The best method to remove and further prevent spyware is to use Spybot.

 Laptop No response to keyboard or mouse, cannot Shutdown:

 With most Laptops I have seen that this will happen from time to time! The easy method to solve this problem is:

 ·         Disconnect the laptop power cord

 ·         Remove the battery from the laptop

 ·         Wait a short while (10 seconds)

 ·         Replace the Laptop battery into the unit

 ·         Reconnect the Laptop Power cord

 ·         Turn the Laptop on

 Troubleshoot Laptop Hibernate and Standby problems

 Power management options on laptops sometimes to cause problems. Hibernate and Standby modes are power saving modes of operations to battery powered laptops.

 Hibernation is a procedure by which the working state (contents) of your work is stored to disk before the computer goes into hibernation or standby. When the Laptop is woken up, you are restored to the exact place you were before. Standby and Hibernation use a low power consumption mode, with enough power to preserve the content of such memory. This means that Laptop computer can wake up without a full restart and loss of work.

 Laptop does not wake up from Standby or Hibernation

 Here are my tested suggestions:

 ·         Give it time - some older Laptops may take up to 30 seconds to wake up - fully

 ·         Some Laptops have special keys or buttons for 'Wake Up' - read the manual

 ·         Press and hold the Laptops power button for five seconds or more. Some Laptops are configured to Suspend or Hibernate with a press of the power button. Holding the power button for 5+ seconds will usually reset and reboot the Laptop

 ·         As a last resort, remove the laptop battery and the power cord, wait 30 seconds, replace the batteries and reconnect the power cord

 Hard Disk Drive / Solid State Drive: Your hard or solid state drive is the home of your operating system and stores all of your data on the computer.

 Symptoms: Hard drives don’t always fail out of the blue. Sometimes there are warning signs, including:

 ·         slow / poor performance;

 ·         frequent freezes;

 ·         BSODs;

 ·         corrupted data;

 ·         accumulation of bad sectors;

 ·         strange sounds.

 When you spot any of these signs, be sure to back up your data before it’s too late. After that, you’re only hope is to temporarily reviving your hard drive to back up data.

 CMOS Battery:

 The CMOS battery provides power for storing BIOS settings when the computer is turned off.

 Symptoms of a bad CMOS: The laptop mostly boots up fine and everything appears to be normal, except for some petty issues:

 ·         That the system time and date are constantly reset;

 ·         drivers stop working;

 ·         occasionally, the PC won’t boot or simply turns off;

 ·         there is an elusive CMOS-related error while booting;

 ·         there are other weird hardware issues.

 Any one of these issues can be caused by a number of things. But if a few of them coincide, then it’s a sure sign that your CMOS battery is failing.

 RAM

 The RAM is your computer’s short-term memory. It temporarily stores any information the system needs to run as it is running.

 Symptoms of bad RAM:

 ·         The laptop doesn’t boot and it might be beeping;

 ·         BSODs while installing the operating system;

 ·         random crashes or BSODs during normal operation;

 ·         crashes while running memory-intensive programs.

 Problem: Power button will not start computer

     Solution 1: If your computer does not start, begin by checking the power cord to confirm that it is plugged securely into the back of the computer case and the power outlet.

     Solution 2: If it is plugged into an outlet, make sure it is a working outlet. To check your outlet, you can plug in another electrical device, such as a lamp or cellphone, and see if it receives electricity properly.

     Solution 3: If the computer is plugged into a surge protector, verify that it is turned on. You may have to reset the surge protector by turning it off and then back on. You can also plug a lamp or other device into the surge protector to verify that it is on.

 Solution 4: If you are using a laptop, the battery may not be charged. Plug the AC adapter into the wall, then try to turn on the laptop. If it still doesn't start up, you may need to wait a few minutes and try again.

 Problem: The sound isn't working

     Solution 1: Check the volume level. Click the audio button in the top-right or bottom-right corner of the screen to make sure the sound is turned on and that the volume is up.

     Solution 2: Check the audio player controls. Many audio and video players will have their own separate audio controls. Make sure the sound is turned on and that the volume is turned up in the player.

         Solution 3: Check the cables. Make sure external speakers are plugged in, turned on, and connected to the correct audio port or a USB port. If your computer has color-coded ports, the audio output port will usually be green.

     Solution 4: Connect headphones to the computer, and see if you can hear sound from the headphones
